Bach was a celebrated composer during his lifetime. -- Although he was well known when he was alive, his claim to fame was as a virtuoso organist. After his death in 1750, his music was not played often but well respected by other musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. The revival of Bach's compositions was initiated by Felix Mendelssohn, almost 80 years after his death, in 1829. Bach is now considered among the greatest European composers.
